 Joyce Patterson
Original Cloth Doll Artist

     Artist Statement

I’m often asked why I make cloth dolls and how I got started.  The simple answer is because of the pleasure they give me.  Although I have studied sculpting in polymer clay, I find working with fabric gives me the most enjoyment.  In the early 90’s I noticed the wonderful cloth dolls being made by several well-known doll artists.  It intrigued me to see what they could do with some cloth, a little stuffing and their skills and I wanted to learn everything I could about cloth doll making.  With instruction and support from these artists and others, I began a blessed life as a cloth doll artist.  After sixteen years and more than 750 dolls, I still look forward to sitting down at my sewing machine to begin a new doll.  I try to pass a little of this enjoyment along with each doll that I create and it is my hope that they bring a smile to all who see them.
